Consultation on Codes of Practice issued under the Police and Criminal Evidence (Northern Ireland) Order 1989 (PACE)
Overview
The Department of Justice (DoJ) is seeking your views on the revisions of the draft PACE Codes of Practice (A to H) and new draft PACE Code of Practice I (Persons detained under national security provisions).
We would encourage everyone with an interest in this matter to read the consultation paper available in the introduction section, which sets out the reason for the revisions and provides a summary of the proposed changes within each of the Codes.
Note that the consultation has been extended by one week, to 23 October 2024, to facilitate further consideration by respondents on the proposed changes.
Why your views matter
The consultation will allow all stakeholders to comment on the proposed changes to the revised Codes and the introduction of new Code I.
The consultation is particularly relevant to anyone who is involved in or interested in the operation of PACE NI and we would encourage everyone with an interest to submit a response.
What happens next
The consultation period will end on 23 October 2024. We will consider the responses to this consultation and modify the draft Codes if appropriate.
The Codes will be laid in the Northern Ireland Assembly following the negative resolution procedure.
