Public Consultation on Enabling Access to Justice Programme Delivery Plan January 2025
Overview
Enabling Access to Justice Reform Programme
The Reform Programme is a major initiative launched by Minister Long on 2 December 2024 to improve access to justice.
The Programme aims to ensure publicly funded legal and support services are effectively meeting the needs of citizens and, in particular, that high quality information, advice and representation continues to be available, that delivery models are tailored to need, harness the benefits of technology and minimise stress. The Programme also aims to ensure that the system is cost-effective and transparent. A number of potential reforms have been identified to help achieve those aims under five key themes:
- Improving Access to Justice;
- Ensuring Appropriate Quality Services;
- Ensuring Value;
- Managing Public Funds; and
- Oversight.
The Programme is expected to evolve over time through consultations and concept testing pilots.
The Programme is expected to evolve over time as further evidence emerges but the Enabling Access to Justice Programme Delivery Plan sets out how the Department intends to progress reform at this stage. Each potential action will be subject to further evidence gathering, detailed consultation and concept testing initiatives but the Department would also like to receive views on the order in which potential reforms are being considered as we want to ensure the relative benefits for citizens and interconnectivities are properly taken into account in decisions on where to focus first. We also want to ensure there is sufficient opportunity for effective engagement on each area.
The Consultation will be open from 30 January 2025 to 27 March 2025.
