Broadcasting of Courts

Closes 16 Jul 2025

Opened 20 May 2025

Overview

The consultation is seeking views on proposals to permit the recording and broadcasting of some court proceedings, including judgments and legal exchanges in the Court of Appeal and sentencing remarks in Crown Court cases.

The priorities of the Department of Justice (“the Department”), as outlined in its Corporate Plan for 2022-25, include the strategic theme of delivering an effective justice system. One objective under that theme is to make our justice system faster and more effective, and serve the needs of those who engage with it. This consultation is one of a number of actions which the Department has committed to in furtherance of that objective. It is a priority of the Minister to maximise transparency and accountability in our justice system.

Views are invited from all court users, people working within the justice system, the media, community and voluntary sector organisations, and anyone else with an interest in promoting open justice.
