Overview
This Tyre Fitting and Maintenance Academy is supported by the Department for the Economy and delivered in partnership with Northern Regional College (NRC), Ballymena. It will provide up 15 individuals with the skills to take up tyre mainteance roles with one of the supporting companies: Kerrs Tyres (Ballymena, Ballymoney, Belfast, Coleraine, Larne and Magherafelt) and Modern Tyres (Ballymena, Ballymoney and Larne).
The acdemy will be delivered in-person, supported by guest speakers and facilitated site visits to employment settings over three weeks where those selected will study IMI Level 2 Unit Accreditation modules:
- Health and Safety
- Chassis Systems
Participants will develop sector relevant skills including changing brake pads and discs, track rod ends/steering arms, shock absorbers and suspension components.
The academy provides a combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and real-world experience required for effective practice within the sector.
RECRUITMENT PROCESS
Eligible applicants will be invited to an information session and interview which will be held week commencing Monday 25 May 2026 at the NRC Ballymena Campus.
TRAINING
Successful applicants must be able to attend three weeks intensive training at NRC’s Ballymena campus starting Monday 8 June to Friday 26 June 2026. Training times are 9:00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday.
- Participants will be paid a £185 weekly training allowance while in training.
- Participants will be paid reasonable travel expenses covering their return journey from their place of residence to the college while in training.
- Participants may be eligible for assistance with childcare costs while in training.
Essential Criteria
Applicants must:
- be at least 18 years old
- have a right to work and to undertake Assured Skills Training in the UK at the point of application and not be disqualified from doing either by reason of their immigration status. Proof of this will be required in order to progress to interview.
Whilst there is no minimum level of qualifications required to apply for the academy, preference will be given to applicants with Level 1 or higher English and Maths, which will be verified before interview.
**Applicants should be aware that the companies may apply additional right to work criteria at point of employment and a job offer is not guaranteed.
Those who successfully complete Assured Skills Academies are guaranteed a job interview with the participating company. Applicants should note the job roles available are not eligible for skilled worker sponsorship.
