Biomethane Strategy and Policy Framework - Supporting Energy and Agricultural Resilience, Nutrient Management and Decarbonisation

Overview

Biomethane is a renewable gas produced by anaerobic digestion of organic waste materials, generating biogas that can be upgraded through removing carbon dioxide and impurities. As a low carbon, drop-in fuel, biomethane can be used in domestic and business heat applications to support the decarbonisation of energy use. Biomethane can also help the environment and agriculture by turning farm and food waste into a renewable gas, reducing greenhouse gas emissions while making nutrients easier to manage, recycle, and use more efficiently.

The Department for the Economy (DfE) and The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) have committed to developing a Biomethane Policy Consultation as part of the 2026 Energy Strategy Action Plan and invite your views and comments on this consultation.

Why your views matter

This consultation process will enable local stakeholders to provide feedback on how the proposals can work for everyone. Your views are important in helping the Departments develop a Biomethane Strategy that is robust, evidence based and capable of delivering long term benefits across energy, agriculture and the environment. The Departments are keen to understand the potential opportunities, impacts and challenges associated with the proposed policy positions. By participating in this consultation, you will contribute to the development of a well-informed, practical and sustainable policy framework.
