Teacher Recruitment and Retention in Northern Ireland
Overview
A survey carried out by the Department of Education in June 2024 helped to identify the key recruitment and retention challenges facing schools in Northern Ireland and confirmed that these were particularly acute for post-primary schools. To address this, the Department launched a pilot ITE Bursary Scheme. Commencing in September 2026, the Bursary Scheme seeks to incentivise teaching careers in subjects where recruitment challenges are most acute.
The recruitment and retention of qualified teachers is a key priority within the TransformED strategy and continues to be a focus for the Department. Recognising that issues can change and impact different school types in different ways, an up-to-date assessment of the situation is required.
Why your views matter
To support this, the Department is undertaking a further short survey across all schools in Northern Ireland. The survey aims to gather information on the challenges currently faced in recruiting and retaining teachers. Your input will provide crucial insights that will inform our approach to strategic workforce planning and help identify any emerging issues or trends.
Please be assured that your responses will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and used solely for data analysis and strategic workforce planning.
