REVIEW OF SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY

Closed 27 Sep 2024

Opened 20 Jun 2024

Overview

The cost of living crisis has brought into sharp focus that school uniforms and other such items can be a financial burden, particularly for lower income and large families.

The Minister of Education plans to introduce statutory guidance so that all governing bodies will be required to review their current school uniform policy and ensure costs are manageable for parents/carers. This consultation seeks views on what should be contained within any statutory guidance on school uniform policy, particularly around the cost and affordability of school uniforms, the use of branded items and restricted supplier arrangements. Views are also sought on the proposal to introduce cost control measures, such as a price cap.

A consultation document, which provides greater detail, has been created and may be useful when completing the survey. To view this document please follow the link below:

The questions you will find in the online questionnaire correspond with those in the consultation document which may assist in completing the survey.

All responses will be considered and a summary report of responses will be published on the DE website following completion of the consultation.

Why your views matter

To ensure that the cost of a school uniform is affordable and does not become a barrier for children attending any school, we are seeking your views.

The survey should take approximately 5 - 10 minutes to complete.
