Gambling Consultation

Closes 21 Feb 2020

Opened 16 Dec 2019

Overview

Northern Ireland law in respect of gambling is contained in ‘The Betting, Gaming, Lotteries and Amusements (Northern Ireland) Order 1985’ (the 1985 Order).  It is broadly modelled on much older law from Great Britain.

The 1985 Order regulates all gambling in Northern Ireland other than the National Lottery.

The courts and district councils license gambling activities; the Department is responsible for track-betting licences; and responsibility for enforcement of gambling law lies with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

Why We Are Consulting

The purpose of this consultation is to seek views on the appropriateness of the current legislation and potential areas of gambling activity which need to be included in any legislation on the regulation of gambling in Northern Ireland.

It will fall to the next administration to make final decisions on gambling reform and promote the necessary legislation.

Before proceeding to answer the following questions you are advised to first read the consultation document "Regulation of Gambling in Northern Ireland" as it provides fuller explanation of some of the issues.
