Overview

INTRODUCTION

To try and ensure that children who are entitled to Free School Meals do not suffer further hardship as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Department of Education has been running two similar but separate schemes:

A: Direct Payments Scheme in lieu of Free School Meals - In normal school term time  from March 2020, direct payments of £13.50 per child per week have been made to families of children entitled to Free School Meals during periods when schools have been closed because of Covid-19 and children were learning from home and unable to access their free school meal in school.

B: School Holiday Food Grant Payment Scheme - Free School Meals are not available in normal school holiday time, however direct payments of £13.50 per child per week have been made to families of children entitled to Free School Meals on behalf of the Northern Ireland Executive to try and alleviate hardship and ‘holiday hunger’ for these families

Your views are vital in helping us evaluate both of these schemes and find out if they were successful in helping alleviate hardship for families during the Covid-19 pandemic and assist the Northern Ireland Executive in its planning for a future anti-poverty strategy.
